Lucia wins LTA Grade 4 singles title at Magdalen Park

Lucia Sariscanova wins the women’s open singles title at Magdalen Park

Congratulations to Lucia for winning the LTA Grade 4 Singles title at the Magdalen Park Senior Open Tournament over the May bank holiday weekend, and pocketing the £100 first prize with the loss of just 3 games for her efforts.

Lucia Sariscanova, 29, who is from Slovakia and a tennis coach and the junior coordinator at Woodfield Grove Tennis Club, is no stranger to competition, having competed on the WTA Tour in 2006 and now making a return to singles match play.

She had little trouble in her opening round on Saturday, dispatching Matilde Richou without the loss of a game in just 42 minutes on court 1.

Her next opponent of the day, Laura Mulders, took two and a quarter hours to overcome the second seed, Daisy Stevens, 4-6 6-4 6-4, earlier in the afternoon, and had little left for the semi-final played that evening.

It took Lucia 59 minutes to dispatch the Magdalen Park member in straight sets on court 7, 6-1 6-1, to secure her place in the final against the top-seeded Tsvetomira Arsenova from Bulgaria, rated 3.1, the following day.

Under a blazing hot noonday sun on Sunday, Lucia got off to a great start in the final, winning her opening game and then immediately breaking her opponent’s serve.

She kept the pressure on, helped by her young opponent’s nervousness and hitting to a good length, striking several great winners off her backhand in the process to secure the first set with relative ease.

Arsenova began the second looking somewhat stronger, but Lucia won her opening serve and, once again, broke immediately to go up 2-0.

Although the Bulgarian won the next game, it proved to be of small comfort because, despite playing better and enduring some testing rallies, Lucia’s accuracy and few unforced errors made the result inevitable and she clinched the title in just 55 minutes, 6-0 6-1, cheered on by an impressive delegation of Woodfield Grove members on the sidelines.

The lack of silverware was, perhaps, disappointing but Lucia’s performance was majestic and she was certainly happy with the cheque.

In fact, her appearance on court at Magdalen Park had lasted a little over two and a half hours to complete her three matches, signalling that she is not only honing her singles skills again but is well on the way now to raising her LTA rating.

Spring tennis is coming

Spring tennis is coming, the weather is improving and the days are getting longer. Soon the clocks will go forward an hour and it will feel wonderful to play into the evenings again.

At Woodfield Grove, our thoughts are turning to spring cleaning! The website has already had a major revamp for members, making it easier to navigate and is full of topical and historical news.

The patio has been pressure-washed ahead of the next working party when volunteers will spruce up the club for the summer.

And we have our Annual General Meeting on Tuesday 24 March at 8pm when we will review the past year’s activities, approve the accounts and elect the committee to run the club for the coming year.

The Ris Team Cup

We are introducing a new team event for members this spring – the Ris Team Cup – to be contested by four teams over just one day on Saturday 16 May using the new Fast4 short format, which should prove to be great fun and involves around 40 players. There will be a barbecue too.

In addition to the regular Surrey League matches now been played by some seven teams, there is the Summer Knock-out and, of course, the Millennium Cup, which starts in April.

Mixed Singles Ladder

Plus there is social tennis too and a mixed singles ladder to spice up the challenge. This has recently been switched online so players can track and challenge easily.

We also have online booking for the courts so tennis is now just a smart phone away!

Running alongside all this competition are a series of social events, which have already been slated for the diary so there is a lot going on at Woodfield Grove!

Open Day

If you are not a member you have a chance to come down to try out the club on Sunday 19 April when it will be open to visitors from 2pm until 5pm.

You can, of course, drop in to be shown around whenever it suits you but during the Open Day you can play as well as meet the coaches and other members.

Feeling a bit rusty tennis-wise? Then take some coaching from our brilliant team or try out the Sunday afternoon Pay-&-Play with Coaching session, full details of which can be found elsewhere on this website.

Go on! Give yourself a treat this year and join our club!

Doing Well

"Yours!" the cry of mixed doubles...
“Yours!” the universal cry of mixed doubles…

The club seems to be thriving, with an influx of new members and an expanding junior programme.

We are delighted to welcome several new members over the autumn and look forward to seeing them taking part in the Winter Mixed Handicap Tournament, the entries for which are now being taken ahead of its start in January.

Members can sign up now the tournament with the closing date of 19 December, after which partners will be randomly picked and the draw made!

The final will take place on Saturday 18 April at the club.

We are also approaching the festive season and will soon be putting up the decorations ahead of the Christmas Party on Saturday 13 December.

Members, their family and friends are welcome to come along.

Newly re-surfaced courts

Just re-painted after being re-surfaced

It was hard to believe that our ‘new’ courts needed to be re-surfaced but, after some 14 years of use, it was time to do so.

As a result, WGTC now has newly re-surfaced courts!

We had kept them in good nick, with regular cleaning and painting over the years but the cushioned Plexipave surface became worn and needed attention, particularly at the back where there was some quite serious root damage.

So, over a couple of weeks in August, the three acrylic courts were duly resurfaced and are now back in play, looking wonderful!

The fourth macadam court has also been painted so all four courts at the club are now in tip-top shape for the next 14 years or so!

Thanks to all the members for their patience over the period of the works. It’s been worth it!

With all four courts floodlit until 10pm, Woodfield Grove is a great place to play over the coming winter months.

We also have a great coaching team, who are waiting to help you with your game, whatever standard or age you are.

If you are not already a member, you should be! Come along and have a look for yourself.

You will be welcome!
